You might know someone

They say that every person in the world knows someone who has or has died from cancer.  Think about that for a second.  I’m sure if you think about it, you can see the face of a person that you know, or knew, who was afflicted with some form of cancer.  Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer.  It affects a smaller number of people than more prevalent forms of cancer such as breast or colon cancer, but it is a form of cancer nonetheless, which means that it is a serious condition.  Mesothelioma is more narrow in it’s scope of affected people due to it’s cause.  Since Mesothelioma is mainly caused by asbestos exposure it affect less people, mostly due to the fact that it’s cause is known, thus more preventable.  You may not know someone with mesothelioma, but if you think about the person that you do know who has been affected by another form of cancer then you know how horrible the disease is.  We can all do a little bit to help out.  We can donate money, donate our time volunteering at a cancer charity, or we can even just visit our friends or family who are fighting cancer.  There are plenty of resources, charities, and people out there who can use any help you are able to give.  You should definitely research what organization you would like to go through or donate to to make sure that your time or money is going towards an organization that is going to use your charity wisely and in a responsible manner.  Whatever you are able to do to help find a cure for mesothelioma, or any cancer, everyone can use some help in this battle.

More on Clinical Trials

Clinical trials are where drugs start before they are approved and released as accepted treatments.  Experimentation is a necessary precaution so that drugs can be carefully observed in how they perform and how people react to the drug.  Mesothelioma, like many cancers, has specific drugs that are being developed to help treat it.  If you have mesothelioma you can help find new ways of treating it by participating in a clinical trial.  The best resource for seeking information on how to participate in clinical trials is through the National Cancer Institute.  Their website (www.cancer.gov/clinicaltrials) can help you through all of the necessary steps to join a clinical trial.  Many times trials are looking for specific patients.  If you have mesothelioma you can search for clinical trials involving the treatment of mesothelioma and apply to take part.  Currently there is no cure for mesothelioma, but through clinical trials, research, and doctors working tirelessly for a successful treatment, hopefully it is only a matter of time.  If you are afflicted with mesothelioma it is a good thing to help out and try to participate in a trial.  Researching how a drug reacts and performing these trials is the only thing that will lead us to a cure.  To get to the clinical trial phase of, a drug must go through extensive lab research and animal testing.  The clinical trial of drugs used to treat mesothelioma, or anything for that matter, is the final step in a long arduous process for Food and Drug Administration approval of a drug.  Participating in a clinical trial for treatment of mesothelioma is also a great way to gain access to the latest mesothelioma treatments available.

Mesothelioma awareness

I had heard a lot of talk on TV from commercials telling me that mesothelioma was caused by asbestos, but before I actually took the time to do some research, I had no idea what mesothelioma or asbestos even were. I now know that mesothelioma is a cancer that develops in the mesothlium, or the external lining of the organs, and is caused by a harmful substance called asbestos that was used in the construction of many buildings and material. Without having done a little bit of research on my own, I would have never known how serious and detrimental mesothelioma truly is or who is at risk for developing it. I think that since the majority of people living with or who have dies from mesothelioma are senior citizens, it is important that the news media do what they can to educate our loved ones on this disease. Many elderly folks cannot surf the web efficiently enough to really gain a solid knowledge base on mesothelioma. Most of the information I have found on treatment, causes, life expectancy, and resources has been via the internet. I can’t imagine trying to gather information about mesothelioma from any other medium and feeling confident that I’m getting all the facts. Since mesothelioma is a relatively new phenomenon, research still has a long way to go and what is known is available mainly through the web and treatment centers. Many people were exposed to asbestos when they were young and are now at risk for developing mesothelioma so it is important that we inform them of the danger of waiting too late to receive a diagnosis. People should be well informed about asbestos exposure and prescreened for cancer.
