Alternative Treatments For Mesothelioma‏

Mesothelioma is generally treated with a cocktail of medicines, chemotherapy, and surgery, all of which depend on what course of action the physician wishes to pursue as well the condition of the patient. There are alternative forms of treatment for mesothelioma as well. Alternative medicine, or alternative treatments, are named so because they are seen as alternatives to medicine or invasive treatments such as surgery. Basically, they are alternatives to what is accepted in Western medicine. Alternative treatments are not tested by any regulatory body, such as the Food and Drug Administration, which are responsible for approving pharmaceuticals, and alternative treatments generally show varying signs of success. In the treatment of mesothelioma there are a few alternative treatments for some of the symptoms of mesothelioma that have shown some promise. Breathlessness that is associated with mesothelioma can be helped by acupuncture. Breath training with a physical therapist has also shown some good results in helping to deal with breathlessness. Another alternative treatment that has helped subside the breathlessness associated with mesothelioma is practicing relaxation exercises. There are a myriad of relaxation exercises that can be done from meditating to doing some light stretching. Even sitting in front of a aimed at the patient’s face has been shown to help ease some of the breathlessness caused by mesothelioma. Although these are not sure things, these methods have been shown to bring some comfort to mesothelioma patients.

Survival rate

It is hard to think about illness and death, but when diagnosed with mesothelioma, it is important to fully understand that the rate of survival is highly contingent on the health and age of the patient, the stage of the cancer, and the treatments given. Typically after diagnosis, patients will live about a year, but that life expectancy can be severely shortened or extended based of several factors. Patients who are prescreened for mesothelioma have the longest life expectance because they are treated early on and the tumors are generally operable. In addition, a prescreened patient is generally healthier than someone who has been suffering with symptoms for an extended period of time. In addition to treatments, alternative therapies have been shown to increase the patient’s level of comfort and overall well being. Therapies such as acupuncture, massage, stretching, and supplements are some of the alternative therapies that have been shown to provide relief in some patients. Reading about survival rates and life expectancies of mesothelioma patients can be discouraging to those afflicted with the disease, but it is important to remain optimistic since there are so many factors that go into these statistics. Some people have lived with mesothelioma for more than five years and with the research being done with clinical trials, there is always hope for a better chance of survival. A positive attitude has also been shown to improve the life of a patient and many believe that it can lead to a longer life expectancy as well.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a well known therapy for many different illnesses and conditions. In fact, acupuncture has helped to ease the symptoms of several different forms of cancer including mesothelioma.  Acupuncture is not a cure for mesothelioma or any type of cancer, but when used in conjunction with other forms of treatment it has had some positive affects for many patients. Acupuncture after treatments can result in noticeable pain relief, relaxation, nausea suppression, and help to stimulate the growth of healthy cells. Some patients report that while receiving acupuncture they felt sleepiness or some sort of pain during the procedure. Anxiety resulting from tiny needles inserted into the skin has also been reported but after the procedure has been completed most patients agree that any maladies subsided and they feel much better than before. Acupuncture can also help to ease the mind by relaxing the body. Although it will not cure cancer, acupuncture can help patients to have a greater sense of well being and an increased quality of life. Not only is it a relaxing, positive therapy for what ails us, but it is also inexpensive and does not take a lot of time. Many mesothelioma patients have used acupuncture to help them deal with the disease and for most, it has worked to ease the pain and suffering that comes along with cancer. Asbestosis and mesothelioma centers can provide patients with all the information needed to begin acupuncture therapy. The information is free and readily available so it’s worth looking into.
