Working with steel
Before asbestos was found to have such dangerous repercussions to humans being exposed to it, the material was used by many industries and with many different applications. Asbestos can lead to many asbestos related illnesses as well as the rare form of cancer mesothelioma. Asbestos has many desirable qualities in many different applications as well as asbestos having the ability to be manufactured and refined into any number of products. Mesothelioma, the rare form of cancer caused by asbestos, has a long incubation period and can lay dormant for decades before a host has visible symptoms. This is one reason why asbestos was able to gain such wide popularity of use before realizing it’s deadly affect on human beings. The steel manufacturing industry worked very closely with asbestos due to it’s amazing heat resistance properties. Asbestos is a very good insulator and served in many steel manufacturing and refining plants to protect workers from dangerous levels of heat exposure. In fact, asbestos probably made working in the sweltering heat of the steel mills tolerable. Asbestos was also spun into thread and used in different clothing applications throughout the steel industry. Due to its fire resistance it might have saved many a life, although it still exposed people to asbestos, possibly causing other illnesses or mesothelioma. Luckily now we have newer materials that are not toxic to our bodies as mesothelioma is, yet still give us the same useful properties that asbestos is known for.

Cancer as Business
Cancer has become a big business. It is sad to say, but there have been many people who have found many different ways to profit from this terrible illness. There are many cancer charities that are not in the cancer for the business, but to actually find a cure or successful treatment or prevention system for cancer, but many organizations merely fund damage control, which can be costly and largely ineffective in preventing further cases of cancer. It is estimated that cancer donations total in the billions of dollars in America alone and the cost of treating cancer is an astronomical number of dollars. Pharmaceutical companies like Merck and Amgen reap huge profits off of their cancer treating drugs. Mesothelioma lawsuits reap huge payouts for the law firms that successfully litigate large compensatory settlements for their clients who have either died or will soon die from the terrible cancer that is mesothelioma. I often ask why there is so much money wasted in cancer research and treatment. This is such a terrible illness and I can not wrap my head around the fact that there are people who are comfortable in drawing six figure or higher salaries working on the administrative end of an organization such as the American Cancer Society. If you ask me the ones that should be drawing the biggest paychecks should be the doctors and researchers who are the foot soldiers in the war against cancer. Mesothelioma lawsuits, expensive treatments, and huge profit margins have made cancer a cash cow for some yet many still suffer. This is something that must change if we are ever to see cancer eradicated.

Mesothelioma and Nutrition
Cancer is not wholly preventable, but there are precautions one can take that have been shown to greatly reduce one’s risk to many different forms of cancer. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that is caused by dangerous exposure to asbestos. Although the easiest way to reduce your risk of contracting mesothelioma is to steer clear of sites or areas that contain or put you at risk of exposure to asbestos, there are also nutritional precautions one can take to help in prevention efforts. A person’s diet is obviously not going to ensure that they do not contract mesothelioma or any form of cancer for that matter, but it can help prevent as well as treat cancer. Eating a well balanced, nutrient diet is smart just to maintain a healthy lifestyle and many of the nutritional elements found in a healthy diet have been shown to help prevent cancer. One of the most important elements of a healthy diet is paying attention to beneficial foods and steering away from “empty” calories. Foods like candy, sweets, fast food and the like are generally loaded with calories from carbohydrates and fats, which generally leaves makes these foods a poor source of nutrients. Humans only take in a limited amount of total calories per day so it is important that these calories be nutrient dense so that our lymphatic system is not stymied by trying to metabolize these heavy foods. Proper metabolism and lymphatic production is inhibited by eating easily digestible foods such as leafy vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and white meats. These food sources also contain high concentrations of vital nutrients that have been shown to have success in preventing some cancers. Next time you plan out your diet steer yourself towards the healthy stuff, you might just save your life.
