Mesothelioma

Since mesothelioma can take decades to manifest symptoms, it is important to know if you have been exposed to asbestos during your lifetime and be prescreened for the disease if you think you might have been. Getting prescreened for mesothelioma can help come up with a diagnosis even before symptoms surface. The sooner you are diagnose, the better rate of survival you will have. People who have been prescreened and treated for mesothelioma before they experienced symptoms have been able to live for several years after diagnosis, while those who do not receive treatment early on generally have a life expectancy no longer than 18 months. Most people who have been exposed to asbestos came in contact with the toxic material on the job. It is up the previous or current employers to inform employees that they may have been exposed to asbestos. Also, you can contact past employers to inquire as to whether your position would have put you at risk for asbestos exposure. The sooner you are diagnosed with mesothelioma, the sooner you can file a claim for having been made to work in unsafe conditions. Winning a lawsuit is highly contingent on filing a suit as soon as you find out that you have mesothelioma. Being prescreened and filing a suit right away can help to provide some financial support for the medical bills you will be acquiring and it’s best to do so while your still healthy enough to put forth the time and energy .

Right to Compensation

Mesothelioma can be latent for up to forty years.  If you were exposed to asbestos in the 60s it is possible to not show symptoms of Mesothelioma until the 1990s.  It is this fact that makes it so important to be in tune with your own health and understand your symptoms.  Many of those diagnosed with Mesothelioma die within 18 months of the diagnosis.  How can you tell if you have been in contact with asbestos?  Your employer must notify you if you are working in an area where asbestos may be present, as well as supply you with the proper equipment to prevent dangerous exposure.  If there is any doubt you should contact previous employers if you suspect that you worked at a site where you may have been exposed to asbestos.  Although there is no cure for mesothelioma, there are methods of treatment and the earlier it is detected the better your chances are of containing it.  Treatment includes radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and even surgery depending n the severity the condition.  This means that medical bills can skyrocket quickly.  If you believe that your mesothelioma was contracted while working under unsafe work conditions be sure to notify your employer to file a claim.  You have rights and if your employer balked on their duty to provide a safe work environment they should be held responsible. People who have been unknowingly exposed to asbestos have the right to compensation and should not have to bear the burden of steep medical bills on top of suffering from mesothelioma.

It’s a Shame That No One Was Warned About Asbestos.

It’s a crying shame that so many health professionals and companies knew that asbestos were a major health threat for so long before they did anything about it. There are accounts dating as far back as 1st Century A.D. from Romans who made the connection between asbestos and health problems. In 1900 a physician in London actually found asbestos fibers in the lungs of a factory employee who died of lung disease. Despite the fact that asbestos had been linked to major health problems, factory heads did nothing to protect their employees and physicians did not speak about the health risks until it became clear that it was a problem that could no longer be swept under the rug. Around 1950, the number of asbestos-related deaths began to rise, but it wasn’t until 2003 and hundreds of lawsuits later that the use of asbestos of any kind was actually banned. This is just ludicrous considering the mesothelioma was actually connected to asbestos exposure in 1960. Mesothelioma is a very painful and deadly form of lung cancer that could have been avoided in thousands of workers if they had not been forced to be exposed to asbestos by working tough jobs in order to support their families. I only with that something had been done sooner to protect these poor people from this disease, instead of having them unknowingly exposed to just a dangerous substance. The least that sufferers of mesothelioma deserve is to be compensated for their medical bills and lost wages due to the disease.
