Working with steel

Before asbestos was found to have such dangerous repercussions to humans being exposed to it, the material was used by many industries and with many different applications. Asbestos can lead to many asbestos related illnesses as well as the rare form of cancer mesothelioma. Asbestos has many desirable qualities in many different applications as well as asbestos having the ability to be manufactured and refined into any number of products. Mesothelioma, the rare form of cancer caused by asbestos, has a long incubation period and can lay dormant for decades before a host has visible symptoms. This is one reason why asbestos was able to gain such wide popularity of use before realizing it’s deadly affect on human beings. The steel manufacturing industry worked very closely with asbestos due to it’s amazing heat resistance properties. Asbestos is a very good insulator and served in many steel manufacturing and refining plants to protect workers from dangerous levels of heat exposure. In fact, asbestos probably made working in the sweltering heat of the steel mills tolerable. Asbestos was also spun into thread and used in different clothing applications throughout the steel industry. Due to its fire resistance it might have saved many a life, although it still exposed people to asbestos, possibly causing other illnesses or mesothelioma. Luckily now we have newer materials that are not toxic to our bodies as mesothelioma is, yet still give us the same useful properties that asbestos is known for.

Mesothelioma and Veterans

The military is constantly developing ways to ensure soldiers safety. New materials are always being developed, tested, and used in different applications to ensure that our armed forces are able to protect the United States utilizing the most advanced means possible. Asbestos has been used in many different applications throughout all branches of the armed services. Asbestos can cause many different illnesses, including the rare form of cancer mesothelioma. Asbestos caustic and dangerous properties, in regards to it’s properties that are harmful to people, were not fully recognized in the early twentieth century. The materials versatility and resistance to heat, fire, and many chemicals were apparent, and this led to every branch of the military using the material in a wide array of applications. As asbestos was researched more and it’s dangerous properties were recognized, the military began to phase out the use of this mesothelioma causing material. Navy ships and shipyards seemed to have had the highest instances of mesothelioma and asbestos related diseases. This is most likely due to the fact that during demolition and maintenance of ships in the shipyards the asbestos dust was at a high level, making nearly impossible to escape exposure. It is estimated that nearly thirty percent of mesothelioma patients are veterans. Mesothelioma takes years sometimes before visible symptoms are shown by a victim. This makes it very difficult to treat mesothelioma in it’s early stages. Most veterans who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma served twenty to thirty years prior to their diagnosis. It is not known exactly how many living veterans were exposed to asbestos during their military service, but it is estimated in the millions.

Mesothelioma awareness

I had heard a lot of talk on TV from commercials telling me that mesothelioma was caused by asbestos, but before I actually took the time to do some research, I had no idea what mesothelioma or asbestos even were. I now know that mesothelioma is a cancer that develops in the mesothlium, or the external lining of the organs, and is caused by a harmful substance called asbestos that was used in the construction of many buildings and material. Without having done a little bit of research on my own, I would have never known how serious and detrimental mesothelioma truly is or who is at risk for developing it. I think that since the majority of people living with or who have dies from mesothelioma are senior citizens, it is important that the news media do what they can to educate our loved ones on this disease. Many elderly folks cannot surf the web efficiently enough to really gain a solid knowledge base on mesothelioma. Most of the information I have found on treatment, causes, life expectancy, and resources has been via the internet. I can’t imagine trying to gather information about mesothelioma from any other medium and feeling confident that I’m getting all the facts. Since mesothelioma is a relatively new phenomenon, research still has a long way to go and what is known is available mainly through the web and treatment centers. Many people were exposed to asbestos when they were young and are now at risk for developing mesothelioma so it is important that we inform them of the danger of waiting too late to receive a diagnosis. People should be well informed about asbestos exposure and prescreened for cancer.
