Alternative Treatments
Alternative treatments for mesothelioma are being explored by both patients and researchers. Because of complex and aggressive nature of this cancer, specialists are looking for new ways to treat mesothelioma. Some patients have experienced some relief from their mesothelioma by way of alternative treatments. “Alternative” refers to treatments that are not the traditionally accepted means of therapy since they are not scientifically proven. Alternative treatments for mesothelioma include Immunoaugmentative Therapy (IAT) and Intraperative Photodynamic Therapy (IPT) and gene therapy. IAT works by essentially teaching the patient’s immune system to seek and destroy cancer cells. This works by a series of injections that are used to strengthen and balance certain proteins in the blood. APT works by injecting a drug that makes the cancerous cells sensitive to light. A special light is used to better detect the tumors during surgery. Gene therapy is only in it’s beginning stages, but the idea is to be able to replace or remove the mutated genes that cause mesothelioma. While these treatment options have not been scientifically proven, they have been shown to reduce the amount of suffering by some mesothelioma patients. Other types of alternative medicine include homeopathy, faith healing, vitamins, herbs and supplements. Before embarking on any types of alternative treatments, patients should always consult their doctors first as they need to be made aware of any potential risks involved. Also, just because some patients have experienced benefits from alternative treatments, every case is different and others might not experience any change in their medical condition.

Unfortunately, specialists have yet to discover a cure for mesothelioma but there are several treatment options that will help to ease the symptoms. If a tumor is operable, a patient will usually be given a round of chemotherapy or radiation in order to kill any remaining cancer cells.
