Types of mesothelioma
There are seven different types of mesothelioma. These seven types are: abdominal, chyrostile peritoneal, malignant, pericardial, pleural, epithelial malignant, and cystic mesothelioma. Abdominal mesothelioma is also known as peritoneal mesothelioma. This type of mesothelioma affects the tissue in the abdominal cavity. Chryostile peritoneal mesothelioma is a form of mesothelioma caused by the inhalation and subsequent lodging of asbestos fibers within the abdominal cavity. Malignant mesothelioma occurs as a tumor in the lining of the lungs and chest cavity and the tumors can spread quickly to other areas in the body. Pericardial mesothelioma affects the tissue layers surrounding the heart and, as with most variations of mesothelioma, is quite rare. Pleural mesothelioma affects the tissue surrounding the lungs. Epithelial malignant mesothelioma is a form of mesothelioma that affects the tissue membrane surrounding the organs. Epithelial malignant mesothelioma is the most common form of mesothelioma there is. Cystic mesothelioma is a rare form of mesothelioma that occurs by cysts being lined with a layer of mesothelial cells. Cystic mesothelioma is benign and one who is diagnosed with this, generally young females, can usually have a normal life expectancy. Treatment of each form of mesothelioma varies due to the variance in affected areas. For most forms there is usually not a long life expectancy after diagnosis. Generally life expexctancy can range from 6 to 18 months depending on the severity of the condition at diagnosis. Surgery is not always necessary as a treatment. Treatment can range from chemotherapy to surgery, to a cocktail of medicines.
Survival rate
It is hard to think about illness and death, but when diagnosed with mesothelioma, it is important to fully understand that the rate of survival is highly contingent on the health and age of the patient, the stage of the cancer, and the treatments given. Typically after diagnosis, patients will live about a year, but that life expectancy can be severely shortened or extended based of several factors. Patients who are prescreened for mesothelioma have the longest life expectance because they are treated early on and the tumors are generally operable. In addition, a prescreened patient is generally healthier than someone who has been suffering with symptoms for an extended period of time. In addition to treatments, alternative therapies have been shown to increase the patient’s level of comfort and overall well being. Therapies such as acupuncture, massage, stretching, and supplements are some of the alternative therapies that have been shown to provide relief in some patients. Reading about survival rates and life expectancies of mesothelioma patients can be discouraging to those afflicted with the disease, but it is important to remain optimistic since there are so many factors that go into these statistics. Some people have lived with mesothelioma for more than five years and with the research being done with clinical trials, there is always hope for a better chance of survival. A positive attitude has also been shown to improve the life of a patient and many believe that it can lead to a longer life expectancy as well.
Advances in anit-angiogensis drugs
Malignant mesothelioma is when a cancerous tumor occurs on the mesothelium. The mesothelium is basically a protective and useful sac that lines the internal body cavity. A tumor is a growth that starts off as a single cancerous cell that divides rapidly and ends up developing into an abnormal growth that can vary in size from itty bitty to massive. Cancer research is moving along, developing new and promising drugs and treatments for various different types of cancers. One of the newer treatments that is hoping to have promising results is the development of anti-angiogenesis drugs. The theory behind anti-angiogenesis drugs is that tumors must create new cells in order to expand and, thus, survive. What the anti-angiogenesis drugs do is deny the body its ability to create new cells. This, in turn, denies the tumor its ability to grow and expand or create new tumors. The side effect of this is that the anti-angiogenesis drugs deny every cell that needs to reproduce its ability, so anti-angiogenesis drugs are still not a perfect solution to the eradication of tumors. Anti-angiogenesis drugs have not been fully refined and still largely remain in the clinical trial phase. To date, the Food and Drug Administration has only approved one anti-angiogenesis drug. As these drugs are researched and refined, however, they will continue to provide a new tool in the battle against cancers like mesothelioma.
